Why?

A lack of a well structured solution and the dedication to enforce it.

There is an urgent need to take up large scale reforms in bringing about efficiency in agricultural water usage which constitutes the large chunk of our water needs. Inefficient irrigation systems are literally draining the precious resource away. Domestic water conservation system too needs a relook.

Here are some uncanny ways of saving water for the common man

1. Eat less sugar. The benefits are dual, better health and water conservation. Producing one kilogram of sugar consumes a whopping 2500 litres of water as per the statistics of Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices, Maharashtra.

2. Waste no food. Agriculture constitutes 85 percent of the fresh water consumption, so next time you serve yourself a meal, remember that food wasted is precious water wasted too. There is a huge embodied water footprint in food grains.

3. Recycle your clothes. Cotton production is another top consumer of water. Recycling used clothes and upcycling cotton fabric saves water indirectly

4. Ditch the shower and pick up the traditional bucket and mug. This single step saves litres of water.

5. Reuse the RO( Reverse Osmosis) water

The more well known methods for the ones who are ready to take this water conservation mission seriously

1. Rain water harvesting is the answer to our water needs. For new homes, a large underground rainwater sump provides for the water needs in the rainy and months into the dry period.

2. Waste water recycling. Used water in our homes is classified as grey water and black water. Grey water can be recycled and used for a variety of household needs including toilet flushing, washing and irrigation.

Lessons are to be learnt from the desert state of Israel. When we act with awareness and determination, collectively we can bring out a huge change!
